2003 Blue Collared Shirt Recipients

This past Saturday, November 22, m2 Bay Area athletes joined together for thhe 3rd Annual
m2 Season-end Dinner to celebrate and recognize a successful season of training and racing.
Feats and foibles were duly recognized by the Master as we toasted our year’s efforts.

The venue was a private terrace room at a cozy Italian restaurant in the Marina. Good food,
nice atmosphere, friendly people, a fun evening indeed.

Our agenda also saw the awarding of the highly coveted Blue Collared M2 shirts. Recipients
of these awards must have demonstrated excellence in any one of 3 categories:
1. Extraordinary Kung Fu training karma in the form of an exceptional workout or by consistency
   in pursuit of one's goals
2. Major breakthrough in a race or an event
3. By setting an example that is inspiring to others

2003 Recipients
Cathy Johnson
Near perfect attendance for 2 years running at M2 Performance Spin, always seated
front and center, also referred to as Mother Gutter-bunny in honor of her status
as leader of her cycling team buddies the Gutterbunnies, frequently called upon to be
the pulse of the spin group as to one more interval or not, Cathy is a constant
presence in our venerable Thursday night spin and helps keep m2 on his toes.

2004 goals include traveling to France to ride the Tour route through the Alps.

Mark McKee
Mark demonstrated each of the 3 qualities for Blue-collared shirt recognition. A 15 year
veteran of the sport, Mark set personal bests at a number of staple events which included
Pacific Grove, Sentinel, and the Double-Dipsea Escape Triathlon.

Consistent m2 Performance Spin attendance for 2 years running and complementary computrainer
sessions, along with regular track attendance saw Mark realize his pre-season
goal of running for the 1st time a sub 40' 10k in a tri-event, something Mark
did twice this past season.

Mark's 2003 season was a perfect example of setting challenging goals, developing a plan,
being consistent in executing the plan, and reaping the rewards as he built
fitness over the course of the entire season.

Matt Barger
Matt shared a similar season to that of Mark, and which is no wonder. Matt is also
46 years old, works in the investment business, attends m2 performance spin, Tuesday
night track, and trains using a computrainer. Together they shared several
podium finishes.

A veteran of the sport, Matt set personal bests in several staple events this past
year. His son Tommy B is a chip off the block (and then some), winniing the
junior event at Treasure Island by more than 10 minutes, a record which might only
be threatened when young Jimmy McCormack turns 11 some 9 years hence.

I have worked with Matt since 1998 and we have shared more than a few laughs as we
practice our habit of using sport and triathlon to test our mettle. It was very satisfying
to read Matt's last race report in which he set personal bests, but was encouraged
because there was still room for more.

Nikki Galvan
Nikki is the poster-girl for quintessential Kung Fu training karma, possessing an abundance
of "can-do" spirit. Serving as my right arm as track coordinator at GGTC track,
perfect drill instructor for all of our running exercises, a fixture in the front row of
Thursday evening Performance Spin, TBT drill-seargeant and sing-along leader, Nikki's is
a wonderful presence at all of our training sessions.

Congratulations and thank you to Cathy, Mark, Matt, and Nikki.
