Dave Dornaus of Boston, training under M2-Boston Coach Karen Harnett, had himself a dandy of a race at classic Roth Ironman event. Dave improved his IM best from IM Australia and Canada to 9hr06min, lopping off some 40 minutes in the process---not so easy to do when you are starting in the sub 10 range and the course is not Brazil or similar---the Roth bike course has some real teeth in it. The key to Dave's performance was a solid 4hr50min bike, and holding it together on the run 3hr20min where he is usually challenged. An interesting aspect of Dave's bike was that he even split the 2 lap course---not so easy to do in a 112m ride. Dave spent the brutal Boston winter indoors, effectively building "base" with smart 1hr-1hr10min strength and threshold training which progressive overload, and none of the 3-4 or even 5hr indoor sessions that many feel compelled to do. Spring good weather allowed plenty of time to hit the roads and build race specific training and endurance to top IM form. Standard M2 training concept and at times referred to as reverse periodization. The M2 article which explains this is titled, Training Backwards--the Pyramid Turned Upside Down. Kudos to Dave and Karen for such great execution.
