Rumors of Boston-area Carmen Monks' demise, aka Big Daddy, as well as the TOG for the original grasshopper, have been greatly exaggerated. Last year was a busy one for BD with an intimate wedding for some 300 people, the arrival of daughter Benevuto, and a high-powered job in the financial industry. Training suffered, and Boston area Team Pyschos sensed blood in the water and were looking to feast. A perennial All-American, BD is back with a vengeance having taken 2nd Place overall in this past weekend's 1/2 Ironman event in North Carolina. Bear in mind that this early season result is coming off a brutal winter which saw little road riding and Computrainer sessions which rarely exceeded 70 minutes per the M2 program. Funny how this formula has been proven to work with countless athetes of mine who have seen the light and can wade through the glop of gotta build base with LSD and marathon indoor spin sessions. In any case, it is good to see Carmen back in form, and I look forward to punishing him myself in Team Pyscho's Annual Harpoon Brewery ride which covers some 130 miles from Harpoon's Boston brewery to the brewery in Brattleboro VT. Ohh, the carnage with so many Psychos assembled in one spot.... Here in the Bay Area, Michael Tymoff is becoming a force at the 1/2 IM distance, particularly on the bike. Michael posted the fastest amateur bike splits at both the Oceanside and Wildflower 1/2 IM events; 8th overall bike split at Wildflower. Pretty competitive race fields last time I checked. If you ask Michael where he attributes much of his improvement, he will tell you the M2 Performance Spin class here in San Francisco. Michael is off to this weekend's IM Brazil where he has high hopes.
