Blue Collar Shirt Announcements
As you all know, the blue collar shirt recognition is something that
the Master awards those who have demonstrated exemplary training/
racing performances, or other Kung Fu karma that is truly
extraordinary. The bar is indeed already set pretty high by the
folks who inhabit the world of competitive endurance sports.
In truth, this fun bit of recognition is also a way for me to say how
much I admire and respect someone's efforts, because they have
inspired me to rise in some way to the level they have demonstrated.
This is the first of a series of new inductees that I have been
meaning to recognize…..
I have worked with Ron Trentini since 1997. Ron is from the Boston
area and his athletic background includes playing on Boston
University's national championship hockey team. For Ron, qualifying
for Hawaii has kind of been like the search for the Holy Grail. In
fact, there probably isn't an IMQ race that Ron has not participated
in at some point. So if you need directions to Buffalo Springs,
Muskoka, Blackwater, Springfield, Panama City, Bay State, Philadelphia,
etc. then Ron is your source.
Until this year, it was always the same result; nice try but not
quite. IMC 2000 changed all that. He finally took the Master's
advice and traveled to Penticton, a site where many great champions
have raced, :) and proceeded to dissect the course in a calm and
methodical fashion. A solid swim, a controlled bike, and then a
very concentrated effort on the run where Ron usually suffers,
produced a 10hr14' qualifying effort!
A group of us enjoyed a celebratory dinner at Villa Rosa on race
evening and basked in the aura of contentment that enveloped Ron and
Peg; a special evening that I will remember.
And Peg Trentini....if there ever was a joint effort, then Ron and
Peg have to be
the models. All the folks on Team Psycho will be the first to tell
you of what an incredible support Peg has been during these years.
In fact, Peg is still pissed at mefor dropping her husband at last
year’s Psycho Weekend “take no prisoners ride.” Inany case, I
forgive Peg for her spousal loyalty, and award her a blue collar
shirt as well.
Funny Ron Training Moment
I did a 60m ride this past year with Ron and Carmen Monks in the
Boston area.
Ron was doing his usual race pace and then some from the beginning.
Neither Carmen nor I felt particularly good that day which only made
us angrier at Ron, and there was a fair amount of bickering. After
being bludgeoned for much of thefirst half of the ride, Carmen and
I began to sense weakness in Ron, and began to exploit his weakness
on various climbs as payback.
At one point with Ron struggling to hang on, we heard a scream and
turned to see him grasping his quad which had seized on him. We
encouraged Ron to draft the rest of the way, but periodically he
would rocket past us before his quad would then again seize on him,
causing him to scream and to stop pedaling immediately. (Note: I
did mention that Ron was a hockey player, didn't I?)
This pattern continued until we reached home. Both Carmen and I
thought that this would be a good moment to suggest to Ron that
perhaps the early pace and intensity had been excessive given how he
had finished the ride. As we stood there looking Ron, his clothes
turned white from the sweat, face tired, and his quads still spasming
uncontrollably, he replied, "I disagree, I was feeling great out
there."
Readers will understand how Ron has earned the reputation of being
“most Psycho” on Boston-based Team Psycho.
