About Michael

ATHLETE

As an athlete, I am best known for having won Ironman Canada in 1991 & 1995, defeating many of the sports top athletes in the process. I finished 2nd at Ironman Japan '97 after being overtaken in the last half mile. In Hawaii, I have finished as high as 11th.

My formative years in triathlon were spent in Spain where I trained on a regular basis with some of the best professional cyclists in the world---members of my cycling group have finished as high as 6th in the Tour de France, 3rd in the Tour Dupont, and have collectively won many stages in the Tour and Giro.

During my 8 years in Spain, I was also fortunate to have had access to Spain's equivalent of an Olympic Training Center. Thus, I had tremendous exposure to top athletes and coaches in a variety of sports.

COACH
Since 1994 I have worked with serious-minded, self-motivated athletes in marathoning, cross-country, cycling, and triathlon. Originally, people who were aware of my meticulous and creative approach to training approached me and asked if I could lend them similar guidance on a formal basis. I agreed to do so and in the process discovered that helping serious-minded people achieve personal goals was something that I enjoyed doing.

Currently, I work on an individual basis with many athletes throughout the country, coach a variety of groups here in the Bay Area, and run the Golden Gate Triathlon Club Tuesday track sessions.

The athletes I coach have ranged from a first-time triathlete who qualified for Hawaii via the lottery, to top age-groupers looking to win their division, to 1995 Ironman Champion and 3-time World Champion Karen Smyers.

BACKGROUND
I am originally from Boston, but currently reside in the San Francisco Bay area. I have also lived for extended periods of time in Madrid Spain. I graduated from Brown University after spending two years at Vanderbilt University and a year in Spain as a student in the Experiment in International Living.

Prior to embarking on an athletic career, I worked as a computer programmer during college summers, did internships in Copenhagen Denmark and Madrid Spain, and upon graduation worked as a marketing representative for IBM. I eventually left IBM to pursue my personal goal of competing as a top athlete in the sport of triathlon.

At various stages of my life, I have been a competitive tennis player, a so-so boxer, a high school hockey, football and track team member, water and XC snow skier, and the list goes on. I have always enjoyed sports in general and view my participation in them as an opportunity to challenge my mental and physical capacities.
